Color Me Beautiful Cosmetics is an multi-level marketing company that sells a wide range of popular, name brand cosmetics. The company began based on the book Color Me Beautiful, which was an instructional way to show women the best colors to use for makeup as well as which colors to wear based on their skin tone and hair color. How to become a consultant...

In order to become a consultant, you must purchase one out of the two career packs offered to you. They are both $99 (shipping and handling is separate) and would cost $610 if you were to buy either at retail price. The first is called Beauti-Boutique, which contains 26 different Color Me Beautiful cosmetics (from lipstick to lotion to eyeliner), a training manual, and some getting started materials such as a catalog and makeup trays. The second is called Beauty Noir, which focuses on women of color and involves the name brands Patti LaBelle, Flori Roberts, and Interface cosmetics. You receive 25 Flori Roberts products, 5 Patty Labelle fragrances, 2 Interface lip polishes, 1 training manual, and the getting started materials. After you purchase your package you will receive a phone call from a consultant to help you get started.

The nice thing about this company is that it does not force their consultants to buy an overload of products. After the starter kit, the new consultant can sell products and the company will ship the customer their newly purchased products right to their house. This tones down much of the initial apprehension for new consultants.

The Down Side...

As a consultant, you need to constantly promote yourself by "word of mouth." Anotherwords, in order to make a good amount of cash you need to promote to whoever you can; friends, family, strangers, and whoever else will listen. You are also expected to have cosmetic parties, which you need to gather up people for and figure out a location for, which can really be a pain, and perform cold calls to strangers in attempts to recruit and sell your products. If you are not willing to constantly talk up the business or are afraid of rejection, then this company can be very difficult for you and you may have trouble making money. Now, there is a slight upside here. The company will show you how to set up your own website with the products that you sell. This is definitely a big help in the world of MLMs.

Another aspect that needs to be considered is that if you don't know much about cosmetics, you have to self teach yourself everything in the Color Me Beautiful book in order to be a good consultant. It's sort of like taking a quick cosmetics course, and if you are not willing to learn, study, and be enthusiastic about all of the products as well as knowing exactly what is right for your customer, this may not be the company for you.

How the consultants get paid...

Of course this is the most pertinent question for anyone interested in joining any company. As far as recruiting new consultants, this particular MLM works on a 3x4 matrix plan. What this means is that you can recruit only 3 consultants on each level and you have a maximum of four levels. So, the most you can you recruit is three on level one, three on level two, three on level three, and three on level four. This particular type of plan is very limited, and a lot of times you may directly recruit someone who you cannot sponsor because you are at your max. Instead they would go under someone on your downline. This can put a tight limit on your income, as well as take the "personal" aspect out of the equation. This makes you think wait a minute, isn't the goal of this company to make buying cosmetics a personal experience? This is definitely something to ponder.

As far as the products go, you can make about 61% commission off of the products that you sell. This is about average for an MLM.

Personally...

I personally chose not to join Color Me Beautiful Cosmetics. It is a legitimate MLM and you can make money if you are a great salesperson. However, I prefer companies that focus on online marketing, so I am not put in the situation where I have to harass everyone that I come in contact with. Also, the compensation plan is limited and sort of ruins the personal approach that the company claims is their goal. This makes me worry that the company may not be completely honest.
